ARAGATS - According to the 5th-century Armenian historian Movses Khorenatsi, Aramanyak was the son of the legendary patriarch Hayk. After Hayk’s death, Aramanyak led his people northeast, descending into a vast plain surrounded by towering mountains.
To the west flowed a murmuring river; to the east, the land opened toward the sunrise. At the foot of the mountains, crystal-clear springs merged into gentle streams that wound their way through the valley like youthful rivers dancing around maiden peaks.
To the south, a snow-capped peak rose majestically — a mountain emerging straight from the earth, encircled by the horizon, growing ever higher with every step. It appeared as a wise elder among younger mountains.
Aramanyak settled in the valley, developed the northern slopes, and named the mountain Aragats, while the surrounding lands became known as Aragatsotn — “the foot of Aragats.”
Since those ancient times, the name Aragatsotn has passed down through the centuries and remains engraved in the soul of Armenia.
