LORI — Switzerland in Armenia
Lori is a northern region of Armenia, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Armenia.” It is the birthplace of the great classical Armenian writer and poet Hovhannes Tumanyan. Here, cliffs seem to gaze calmly at one another, while the Debed River gently winds around their feet.

LORI FORTRESS — The name Lori comes from the medieval city of Lore, founded in the 10th century by King David Anhoghin. The fortress-city was built on the edge of a massive gorge and served as a major defensive stronghold for all of Northern Armenia.
Bath culture, a deeply rooted tradition among Armenians, is evident throughout historic Armenian sites — and Lori Fortress is no exception. Here, remnants of both large and small bathhouses remain.
The fortress once housed a royal palace, a church, reservoirs, armories, and residential districts. Over time, Lori Fortress changed hands multiple times, falling under the rule of Seljuks and Mongol-Tatars. However, it was considered nearly impregnable and was only taken due to internal divisions and the weakening of the Kyurikid dynasty.
Today, the fortress is being restored and once again presents its former grandeur. It is a beloved destination for travelers, where your spirit soars — from the depths of the gorge to the commanding heights of the citadel.
